FAQs: Services

CAN YOU ALSO REMOVE SURFACE ROOTS?

Yep, sure can! Depending upon how large, how many, and how long, extra fees will apply.

HOW DEEP DO YOU GRIND A STUMP?

Typically Doug will grind the stump 4-6 inches below the ground level to allow new plantings to grow on the surface. If a deeper grind is requested, extra fees will apply.

CAN I PLANT A NEW TREE OR GRASS ON THE PREVIOUS LOCATION OF THE STUMP?

Absolutely! Doug can make sure to grind the stump so you can plant new trees in the same place or seed grass on its surface, depending on the situation. For best success, Doug always recommends adding at least 3-4 inches of a high-quality black dirt top soil and over-seeding with high quality grass seed mix (like Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Sun & Shade Mix). Remember to water the grass seed as recommended on the packaging for best results.

HOW MUCH TIME IS NEEDED FOR STUMP GRINDING?

Small stumps may only take 15 minutes to remove while larger ones can take a couple hours. Regardless of the stump's size, Doug's equipment is large and efficient enough to finish the job quickly and safely, with no damage to your yard.

WHAT DOES IT COST TO GRIND A STUMP?

It all depends on the size, location, and height of the stump. Jobs with multiple stumps will see a per-stump savings. It is free to get a quote, so just contact Doug or see the Service & Price page for more details.

DO YOU OFFER DISCOUNTS FOR SEVERAL STUMP REMOVAL?

Sure do! Give Doug a call, text, or email for a free custom quote on your job - contact information can be found by clicking here.

WILL THERE BE A BIG HOLE WHEN YOU'RE DONE?

Typically, Doug backfills the hole with the biodegradable wood chips and dirt generated by stump grinding so there isn’t a hazardous hole in your yard. Some larger stumps will actually leave a mound of chips behind. If desired, for an additional charge he can also remove this material from your premises.

WILL THERE BE ANY DAMAGE TO MY LANDSCAPE?

Doug will perform stump grinding with the utmost care to ensure no damage to your lawn. His non-invasive equipment spreads the weight the stump grinding machine across six large wheels and boasts 4-wheel drive to further reduce the impact on your lawn. The only thing you'll notice once Doug is gone is how much better your yard looks without the stump!

CAN I USE THE MULCH PRODUCED BY STUMP GRINDING?

Yes, you can! The mulch is a combination of wood chips and debris that can work wonders in flower and vegetable gardens.

CAN YOU GRIND A STUMP LOCATED ON THE SIDEWALK OR NEAR A WALL?

These tricky stumps can typically be removed with great precaution. However, there are instances were Doug may not be able to remove the stump entirely because of the obstruction or its proximity to a structure. In some cases, extra fees may apply. If you have a question about a potentially tricky stump, just contact Doug for a free onsite, no-obligation quote.

HOW MANY YEARS WILL IT TAKE FOR A STUMP TO ROT IF YOU LEAVE IT IN YOUR YARD?

You have to consider the size, age, moisture level, and species of the stump to tell when it will total rot. A stump located in a place exposed to light might take 25+ years to rot away completely while a tree in a moist and shaded environment can take as little as 15 years to decompose.

IS DOUG'S STUMP GRINDING INSURED OR REGISTERED WITH THE STATE OF MINNESOTA?

Yes, Doug is fully insured! He is also registered with the State of Minnesota Department of Agriculture Tree Care Registry.

IS STUMP GRINDING AND STUMP REMOVAL THE SAME THING?

Stump grinders are different from stump removers. Stump grinders generally do no damage to the yard during the removal process, and the ground-up biodegradable material left over is healthy for the ground and leaves less to backfill once removed. Doug uses a stump grinder.

CAN YOUR MACHINE GET THROUGH MY GATE OR TIGHT SPACES?

Doug's machine was specially designed to fit through a 36 inch gate – that’s a standard-sized gate or opening. If you have a special circumstance, just contact Doug.
